OKC Pest Control Sheds Light On Silverfish Insects

Oklahoma, having a more humid climate than many other states, is known to attract many types of insects. One type of insect that loves warm places is called Silverfish. The most noticeable feature next to their silver to dark gray bodies is the three thread-like tails. The real question most Oklahomans ask our OKC pest control team is whether these insects are harmful.

The answer to that is a little misleading from some perspectives, because they do not actually bite or sting humans. They are also not known to harm any pets. Yet, our OKC pest control team will tell you that they are harmful. Let us explain a bit more about why Silverfish are harmful.

Silverfish like to hide in dark, warm hiding places like food pantries. Their diet consists of things like mold, yarn, silk, sugary substances, starchy foods, and damp wallpaper. They are also especially drawn to dry, starchy substances such as the glue the binds book pages together, boxes, papers, and even some clothing. Our OKC pest control members have even heard reports of people finding them in unopened food packages!

These are the several ways in which Silverfish can be harmful to homes, and more specifically, to items in the home. They are often considered a nuisance to many homeowners.

Have you seen any Silverfish around your home?

You may have noticed Silverfish skittering around in areas such as your kitchen or bathroom near the sink, tub, or toilet. If you see any surface eaten away in irregular patches this could be a sign that you have a Silverfish infestation.

Our OKC pest control team would warn that other predators like Centipedes, Earwigs, and some spiders are known to feed on Silverfish. Thus, if you have Silverfish you may have other things to worry about.
