Pest Control OKC: Keeping Firewood pest at bay Pt. 2

Pest Control OKC has more tips to help pest out of your fireplace!

The Bug Guy, Pest Control OKC, is back with a few more tip to help keep your home free from pests that might live in your firewood over the winter.

Cover for the Summer: New firewood that’s been cut for the summer is a prime target for infestation. If you want to avoid having your firewood pre-infested in the summer, make sure you stack the wood in a sunny area and then cover it. This will help kill and drive out pest living in the wood and keep away pests that might try to take up residence. Always try to cut your firewood from late summer to late fall. Also, make sure your keeping in your state’s guidelines about cutting and transporting wood.

Never Stack Firewood indoors: In our last blog, we talk about why you should burn wood as soon as you bring it into the house. This is because of Overwintering, where pests hibernate over the winter in warm places. Keeping firewood indoors will warm up these pests and bring them out of hibernation and into your home! In addition, these wood piles will provide excellent security for any pests that get into your home through other means!

Use only local Firewood: Aside from being a great way to support local business, keeping local firewood means all the pests inside it are also local. Bringing in firewood from another area might introduce a non-native species to the area. With no natural predators you may see an explosive infestation that spreads to your home. To be safe, should you get non-local firewood burn it as quickly as possible to kill off potential pests.

Pest Control OKC: Keeping Firewood Pests at Bay

Keep the fire going without the pests with these Pest Control OKC Tips

The fireplace is a wonderful home addition to have during the cold winter months. Few things are more relaxing on a cold winter day then sitting down with a nice book or hot cocoa next to a healthy fire. Of course, a fireplace needs wood to burn and the unfortunate reality is that wood can carry some unwanted guests in it. The Bug Guy, Pest Control OKC, has some tips on how to keep these firewood pests at bay this winter.

Store Firewood away from buildings: Never stack your firewood next to a building. Wood burrowing pests can dig directly from your firewood into your home. Placing wood piles next to your home can give certain pests direct access to your home!

First in, First out: Use your oldest wood first, you can make it easier to access this older wood by periodically re-stacking your wood to make the older wood more accessible. Using the older wood reduces the chances that an infestation will build up and infect the whole wood pile and eventually your home!

Eliminate Surface Pests: Before you bring in any piece of wood, inspect it thoroughly. Look over the surface of the wood for any pests crawling around or coming up from inside. Knock the firewood together and shake them thoroughly to loose any pests hiding within.

Burn Firewood immediately when brought indoors:  The easiest way to make sure pests don’t get into your home is to give them as little opportunity as possible. Most pests will burrow into wood to Overwinter, or hibernate. When you leave firewood in your home these pests can awaken and move out before you burn them.

Pest Control OKC: Common Winter Pests

Pest Control OKC talks about common winter pests

Winter is here and the pests are looking to make a nice warm winter retreat within the walls of your home! Most insects will die off in the winter or go into hibernation, but some species will look for a warm, dry place (like your home) to wait out the colder months. Pest Control OKC lays out some of the most common winter pests to look for.

Moth Fly: Commonly known as a “drain fly” these small insects don’t cause any harm, but in large numbers they can become quite the nuisance. As their name suggests, you’ll commonly find them around drains.

Bed Bugs: There was a time when no one had to worry about bed bugs, but in recent years they have made a resurgence keeping many a people awake and annoyed.

Cluster Fly: Cluster Flys are big, slow flys that like to cluster around windows on warm days. There’s never just one of these flys, as their name suggests. If you think you found one, chances are there are many more hiding in your home.

Winged Carpenter Ants: Ants in your home are never a good sign, flying ants are even worse! Should you see a winged carpenter ant in your home during winter, there is a strong possibility that they came from a nest within your home. If you find these winged pests, call for pest control ASAP!

Firewood Pests: There are few things more enjoyable than a nice fire on a cold, snowy day. But be careful, the firewood needed to make those fires can house a large number of pests. Check your firewood carefully to make sure you don’t let any unwanted guests in the house!
