Pest Control OKC Discusses Facts About Gnats

Pest Control OKC: A Little Bit About These Little Insects

Do you notice any swarming gnats around after your 4th of July holiday celebration? Gnats may not seem like a big deal, because of their tiny stature, but they can quickly become quite the annoying problem. Today, our pest control OKC team is going to share a little bit about these small insects.

Here are some facts about gnats that our pest control OKC team wanted to share with you:

  • Even as fully grown adults, gnats remain tiny. They are usually no larger than 33mm.
  • There are also a few different species of gnats; some that bite and some that do not bite.
  • Their diets vary from plants, other insects, or blood.

Some species of gnats are are helpful in pollinating plants as they eat other pests which seek to destroy crops such as aphids and scales. Others, like the Hessian fly, feed on the plants themselves.

The fungus gnat is well known for laying eggs in house plants that have been watered too much. They are attracted to soil, and the fungus in the soil. Furthermore, they enjoy feasting on roots and root hairs of plants.

The black gnat (also known as black fly) will feed on blood. These gnats have been known to carry parasites and transmit diseases to livestock and humans.

Our pest control OKC team hopes that by now you can understand that these little flying insects are capable of some destructive behavior. Moreover, due to all gnats being so small it may be difficult to identify which species you’re seeing.

If you have a swarm of gnats that just seem to hang around, the first thing you should do to help keep the situation under control is attempt to locate their food source and correct the problem. Second, it may be a good idea to schedule a pest control inspection if you struggle to get rid of the insects on your own.

Our pest control OKC team would be happy to help with your pest control needs. If you need us, give The Bug Guy a call at 405-973-5522.

Millipede and Centipede- Pest Control OKC

Pest Control OKC Sharing Differences Between Millipedes And Centipedes

Pest Control OKC: Identifying Traits Of Arthropods

Although commonly mistaken as insects both millipedes and centipedes are classified as arthropods. These multi-legged critters are also often confused for one another when startled people see one of them crawling around. Today, our pest control OKC team is here to clear things up a bit and hopefully educate readers about the differences between millipedes and centipedes.

Our pest control OKC team will start by giving you some identifying traits about millipedes.

Millipedes vary in shape; most of them being more tubular, like a worm, and others having flatter bodies. Their legs are paired in each body segment, except for the first three. Studies show that millipedes are not actually poisonous, but many species have glands capable of producing irritating toxic fluids that may cause allergic reactions for some people. The spray of some millipedes contains hydrochloric acid which can chemically burn the skin and cause long-term skin discoloration.

Of course, millipedes would much rather stick to their diet of dead plant matter, fungi, and other insects than mess with humans. They also like to live in dark, moist places and they usually try to stay hidden. That’s why, if you find one or more of them, it’s best to just leave them alone.

Millipedes can be any of the following colors: Black, brown, red, ivory, and white.

Next, our pest control OKC team will share a little information about centipedes.

Centipedes have flattened segments with only one pair of legs per segment. Centipedes are known for using their venom to kill their prey. if they feel threatened they can bite humans. The poison produced by centipedes is usually not considered fatal, but it can cause a moderate reaction similar to a bee sting. For those who are allergic to insect venoms and other toxins, more severe reactions may occur. Centipedes are usually found outside, near trees, where they can find their next insect meal.

On occasion, the hunt for insects can bring centipedes looking inside outbuildings, basements, or cellars. as with millipedes, our pest control OKC team would not recommended picking up or touching a centipede!

Centipedes can be any of the following colors: Red, yellow, and orange.

Our pest control OKC team hopes that you are having a safe and happy summer. Should you need any pest control assistance, we’d love to help. You can reach The Bug Guy at 405-973-5522.

Silverfish- OKC Pest Control

OKC Pest Control Team Answers Why Silverfish Are Harmful

OKC Pest Control Sheds Light On Silverfish Insects

Oklahoma, having a more humid climate than many other states, is known to attract many types of insects. One type of insect that loves warm places is called Silverfish. The most noticeable feature next to their silver to dark gray bodies is the three thread-like tails. The real question most Oklahomans ask our OKC pest control team is whether these insects are harmful.

The answer to that is a little misleading from some perspectives, because they do not actually bite or sting humans. They are also not known to harm any pets. Yet, our OKC pest control team will tell you that they are harmful. Let us explain a bit more about why Silverfish are harmful.

Silverfish like to hide in dark, warm hiding places like food pantries. Their diet consists of things like mold, yarn, silk, sugary substances, starchy foods, and damp wallpaper. They are also especially drawn to dry, starchy substances such as the glue the binds book pages together, boxes, papers, and even some clothing. Our OKC pest control members have even heard reports of people finding them in unopened food packages!

These are the several ways in which Silverfish can be harmful to homes, and more specifically, to items in the home. They are often considered a nuisance to many homeowners.

Have you seen any Silverfish around your home?

You may have noticed Silverfish skittering around in areas such as your kitchen or bathroom near the sink, tub, or toilet. If you see any surface eaten away in irregular patches this could be a sign that you have a Silverfish infestation.

Our OKC pest control team would warn that other predators like Centipedes, Earwigs, and some spiders are known to feed on Silverfish. Thus, if you have Silverfish you may have other things to worry about.

To protect your home and personal belongings from Silverfish, please feel free to contact our OKC pest control company. The Bug Guy can be reached at 405-973-5522.

Butterflies- Pest Control OKC- Ants

Pest Control OKC Eliminating Butterfly Eating Ants!

Pest Control OKC Protecting Beautiful Butterflies

Since the earliest days of spring beautiful butterflies have fluttered back to Oklahoma. Flower garden owners and lovers from all over the state can admire these lovely creatures as they interact with nature. Our pest control OKC team would love nothing more than to make sure the butterfly population lives on, but it can be a struggle without proper pest control treatments as many predators like ants feast on butterflies!

It’s just sad and disturbing (even to our pest control OKC team members) to think that something so pretty could have any enemies at all, but the truth is that there are quite a few predators of butterflies. Many ant species find butterflies to be quite tasty whether the butterfly is still in the egg, as a caterpillar, in chrysalis, or an adult. Quite often ants that are found eating a butterfly will consume the body of the butterfly and leave the wings intact.

In case you need convincing to utilize pest control OKC services to eliminate butterfly eating ants, here are just 3 good reasons why preserving butterflies is important:

  • Butterflies represent a healthy environment and ecosystem.
  • Butterflies help pollinate plants.
  • Butterflies have an interesting life cycle worth studying and have provided many educational benefits for people all over the world.

While spraying to eliminate ants that eat butterflies may seem like such a small step to take (and it may in turn keep butterflies out of your actual yard) it will still be one that helps the butterflies live just a little longer. One may argue that many butterflies will become food for larger animals, like birds, later on. This may be true, but our pest control OKC team believes it’s worth a shot to give butterflies a chance to live a full life before they complete their “circle of life”.

Stink Bugs- OKC Pest Control

OKC Pest Control Warning Of Brown Marmorated Stink Bugs

OKC Pest Control Shares A Story About A Stink Bug

Stink bugs get their name from the obvious pungent odor that they erect when they are threatened. It has been determined that this stinky smell helps stink bugs protect themselves from predators. Not only do they actually stink, but some may say they metaphorically stink, as well. At least, that would be the response from one blogger, by the name of Lydia Whitney, as she reported to having quite an unpleasant experience with a Brown Marmorated Stink Bug. Today, our OKC pest control team is sharing her short story with you!

Lydia Whitney wrote about her experience with a Brown Marmorated Stink Bug on her blog.

In this article she talked about how she sat at her computer working when she felt a “sharp pain” on her bare foot. Whitney looked down and discovered a stink bug biting her, but was highly confused as many experts have stated that stink bugs aren’t harmful to humans and do not bite. She went on to explain that normally a Brown Marmorated Stink Bug feeds by piercing a plant and sucking on the plant juices with its beak, which is made with straw-like mouthparts. The damage done to the plant is generally defined as mild to severe.

With this explanation and the evidence of pain felt by Whitney after the stink bug was found on her foot, it would be difficult to argue that they do not bite. In most cases, they probably wouldn’t prefer to bite people, but they are a nuisance to people with vegetable gardens, precious plants, and even inside homes.

Our OKC pest control team is inclined to share a few warnings with you as many homeowners have thought it was a good idea to attempt sweeping away or vacuuming up stink bugs. Our OKC pest control professionals would like you to know that the smell emitted from these bugs can last for hours. Yes, even inside the vacuum!

To prevent stink bugs from getting inside of your home consider checking to make sure your windows and doors are properly sealed. Additionally, consider having ongoing OKC pest control treatments for all insect control.

If you need help keeping your yard and home safe from pests, give our OKC pest control professionals a call. The Bug Guy can be reached at 405-973-5522.

Hobo Spider- OKC Pest Control

OKC Pest Control: Hobo Spiders Are Crawling Out Of Obscurity

OKC Pest Control: Keeping An Eye Out For Hobo Spiders

At one time hobo spiders were actually more well known as the venom was once said to be life-threatening. Today, the perspective may be a different as further research dispelled the deadly medical threat of a hobo spider’s bite. That doesn’t mean; however, that they aren’t still around and that their bites won’t do some damage. Luckily, our OKC pest control team still has an effective treatment solution to keep you safe.

While the hobo spider is originally documented as being native to Europe, it’s no wonder that thanks to years of immigration and travel that several places in the United States have become home to this spider species.

Hobo spider bites are often mistaken for other types, especially due to the Brown Recluse Spider stealing the spotlight over the years. To help you identify hobo spiders here’s our OKC pest control team’s description of these little critters:

  • They are brown in color.
  • They have no distinct rings on their legs, but they are covered in short hairs.
  • Their abdomens usually have several chevron shaped markings.
  • Males have two large palps- commonly described as “fangs, venom sacs, or boxing gloves” (they are actually just male genitalia).
  • Females have palps without the “swollen” ends.
  • Females have a much larger abdomen.

The hobo spider has poor eye site and less sticky webs in comparison to other spiders. Simply stated: to live; they must attack. This most likely explains why hobo spiders are known to be so aggressive by nature and will bite humans. As to be expected, the female spiders are even more defensive if they are tending to their egg sacs. Most bites probably occur when the spider becomes trapped in clothing, bed sheets, or someone accidentally breaks their web.

Our OKC pest control team is just here to let you know that the hobo spider is no longer an unknown entity, especially with the onset of warmer weather. In fact, our OKC pest control team has found funnel shaped webs attached to objects in many yards, by foundations, between planters, and other ground-level objects.

This is one spider species that is crawling out of obscurity. To keep your yard pest-free, our OKC pest control team would be happy to help! You can reach The Bug Guy at 405-973-5522.

Cockroach- OKC Pest Control

OKC Pest Control Reports Of Cockroaches Inside And Out

OKC Pest Control Provides Cockroach Prevention

There have been many reports from families of cockroaches appearing outside in their lawn and sidewalks. Then, there is the fear that they will migrate into the home. It’s almost as if the song lyrics “no wind, no rain…can stop me baby” were really written to describe the never-ending will of cockroaches. If it’s one thing our OKC pest control team understands it’s that an infestation of uninvited pests like cockroaches is not just problematic due to them being a bother, but they can also cause household damage and health problems.

The truth is that even clean homes can provide a comfortable habitat for cockroaches with the three main things they need to survive; food, water, and shelter. If you have cockroaches or you know anything about their nature, then you’ll soon come to realize they are one of the most persistent pests which are very difficult to get rid of. Of course, our OKC pest control expertise would share that having pest control treatments at least 3 times per year (spring, summer, and fall) would be the best method to keep these critters away.

In addition to eradicating your cockroach pest problem with ongoing OKC pest control treatments, we would also recommend taking some preventive measures between those sprays. Here are a few ways you can help keep your home cockroach-free:

  • Store food in sealed containers.
  • Don’t leave pet food and water out overnight.
  • Tightly cover garbage cans containing food scraps.
  • Take trash out regularly.
  • Don’t let water accumulate anywhere in the home.
  • Don’t leave clutter around.
  • Close off places where pests can enter and hide.
  • Check for pests in packages or boxes before carrying them into your home.

If you’re home has become targeted by any uninvited insects staking claim in your space, don’t let them continue crawling around! Give our OKC pest control team a call as we’d love to help!

Honey Bee- Pest Control OKC

How Hornet Control Via Pest Control OKC Helps Save Honey Bees!

Pest Control OKC: Get Rid Of Hornets And Save The Bees

Did you know that the most common honey bee we know in Oklahoma once originated from Europe? Most amazingly, European honey bees are now one of the most familiar insects and are becoming well-known for all the good that they can do in our lives. In addition to honey production, it is estimated that honey bees also provide nearly $20 billion annually from pollination of over 100 cultivated crops. Doesn’t that sound like a good enough reason alone to save these little bees? Our pest control OKC team sure thinks so!

Luckily, many of you are already aware and care about the conservation of the European honey bee population. For those of you who don’t know, there are a few ways to prevent the killing off of these important insects. The most common sense ways would include not trying to kill them or spray them with any sort of pesticide materials. In addition, getting rid of hornets in your yard, by using such methods as our pest control OKC team would utilize, could actually help save the bees, too!

You may be wondering how that makes sense. Let our pest control OKC expert explain.

The fact is that an individual hornet can actually kill up to 40 European honey bees in just ONE minute! Think about how much damage an entire group of hornets can accomplish. In case you need a visual, estimations suggest that a group of 30 hornets can take out an entire hive containing 30,000 bees in less than four hours.  The hornets are brutal when they attack the nearly defenseless honey bees as they swoop in and dismember their bodies. The hornets then fly back to their own nests with the bees’ thoraxes in tow to utilize as food for their larvae.

The only sure-fire way to ensure that your yard stays hornet-free is to have ongoing pest control completed. Our pest control OKC team would love to help you keep your yard safe and in turn allow European honey bees to continue living. If you need help with pest control services, please feel free to give The Bug Guy a call at 405-973-5522.

*Important Note: If you should have a bee problem, do not try to kill them yourself. There are plenty of reputable companies in Oklahoma that will offer save removal and relocation of the bees for you. For the love of bees, please do your research and give one of those companies a call if you notice bee activity on your property!

Bug Guy - Pest Control OKC

The Bug Guy In Full OKC Pest Control Action

April Showers Brings… Many Bugs and The Need For OKC Pest Control!

Have you ever wondered why those pesky bugs are more active during warm spring and summer months? Ants, flies, wasps, spiders… all those creepy bugs have something in common; they need time to reproduce! The reason you’ll start to see more pests in warmer months is because they’ve had more time to lay enough eggs and potentially produce thousands of babies. This season is when The Bug Guy is in full OKC pest control action!

Not many would argue when we say that Oklahoma’s weather patterns have been just plain crazy this year. From the wet, damp rainy days all the way to the extremely and unusually warm spring days; we’ve had it all! It isn’t surprising that these fluctuating temperatures have created the perfect storm for incubating a staggering amount of reproduction for various insect species.

Did you know it only takes one burst of wet weather, for example, to create a breeding ground for flies? The astonishing part is that flies have the capability of laying up to 900 eggs! The offspring can then hang around for nearly a month afterwards. Annoying, right? If you’ve seen an increase in flies around your home in the last few weeks, it could be a result of rainy days all the way back in April.

On the other hand, many bugs start to make their way out of their resting places when temperatures become more stable and when weeds, flowers, and grass are alive to help the insects have places to hide and feast. This is why after the rainy month of April, comes the many bugs of May and the much needed use of OKC pest control.

As the busiest bug season is about to be in full swing, it might be wise to schedule your OKC pest control appointment as soon as you can. Our OKC pest control team will be serving the OKC metro area and we’d love to add your home to our list of stops to help keep your yard protected.

You can reach out to The Bug Guy at 405-973-5522 to get started with your OKC pest control services this spring and summer!
