Black Widow Spider- OKC Pesto Control

OKC Pest Control Recounts A Story Of A Black Widow Bite

OKC Pest Control Sharing A Tale Of A Painful Experience

A story told in New York Times by Jackson Landers will most likely make you hope to never be bitten by a black widow spider. In his tale, he identifies what what it was like as the venom from a spider bite spread throughout his body. Our pest control OKC team found the details to be quite undesirable. You be the judge.

The Jackson Landers Story:

Jackson Landers’ day started off like any ordinary trip to a fishing hole near his house. When the bite happened, in his shoe, he thought it felt “like a bee sting” or a thorn wedged in his shoe. Of course, he quickly realized upon inspection that the evidence of “two tiny little pin pricks” meant he had in fact been bitten and not stung. Confirmation certainly came when he saw the squashed spider.

Unconcerned, Landers went on about his fishing adventure, catching three fish before feeling the symptoms grow worse. He specifically noted that there was a “warmth” in his abdomen followed by “pressure, which became a painful cramping.” As the venom continued to spread he started to feel waves of muscles spasms in his lower chest. Of course, he knew he had to go to the hospital.

After being checked into an emergency room, Landers reported that the spasms gripped his rib cage “like a vise” and that his “biceps cramped” as he shivered uncontrollably. He described that he could actually feel the venom making its way to his heart.

Thankfully, six hours after being bitten, Landers ended up receiving an experimental anti-venom called Analatro which, for him, ended the pain almost immediately. It was said that had he not received the treatment he would have experienced a slew of other issues including word-slurring, hallucinations, and uncontrollable sweating.

Black Widow Web- OKC Pest Control

OKC Pest Control Helps You Identify Black Widow Webs

OKC Pest Control: Signs Of A Black Widow

While the reign of insects and spiders seems to be more common in the spring and summer months, you may be surprised to find black widows hiding in places that are undisturbed for long periods of time. The best way to identify a black widow spider’s presence is via the existence of their web. Our OKC pest control team will provide to you, today, some characteristics of a black widow’s web so that you can be on the look-out.

What do the spider webs look like?

Our OKC pest control team will let you in on a secret! Unlike many beautifully arranged spider webs, the black widow’s web is usually an irregular, messy shape. The long threads appear uneven and tangled, but this is actually by design.

The spider instinctively makes the web so that the uppermost portion is supporting, the center is tangled, and the lower portion has vertical trap threads. The design makes it possible for the black widow to suspend a cocoon with hundreds of eggs in it on one side, while also being able to capture flies, grasshoppers, beetles, and other insects to feast on.

Where can their webs generally be found?

You can usually find black widow webs near the ground level. While they like to remain outdoors whenever possible they have, on occasion, ventured to areas of the home closest to the outside. Our OKC pest control team has found them to, generally, be hidden in a seemingly protected place such as garages, basements, under lawn furniture, between crevices, in wood piles, or other dark places.

If you see signs of these messy webs around, don’t hesitate to give The Bug Guy a call at 405-973-5522. Our OKC pest control team would love to help you eradicate any signs of black widow spiders before they actually do become a bigger problem for you!

Bed Bugs- OKC Pest Control

OKC Pest Control Reports The Return Of Bed Bugs: Part 2

OKC Pest Control: Protecting You And Your Bedding

In part one of this series, our OKC pest control team went into detail about how bed bugs have made their way back into the lives of many Americans. We also gave some tips on how to identify these blood sucking bugs in the event that you might have them, too! Today, our OKC pest control team will be answering a few prevalent questions people often have about bed bugs.

Do bed bugs leave evidence on the body?

Just as bed bugs leave behind evidence that they’ve been in your bed, they also leave distinct rash-like patches on the skin where they’ve bitten. These patches can be rather blotchy around the face, neck, back, hands, and arms.  If scratched, the bites can become infected and typically, there are no treatment options unless infection does set in. Bed bugs can transmit Trypanosoma cruzi, the parasite that causes Chagas disease, one of the most prevalent and deadly diseases in the Americas.

Can you get rid of bed bugs without professional treatment?

With a lot of diligence and patience you may be able to do some hard work on your own, but be warned it’s not going to be pretty. As bed bugs can hide in various places you would need to take the most thorough actions possible and remove every large piece of furniture, bag up stuffed animals and like items, and clean up really well. Unfortunately, even if you take every precaution to clean up the mess of bed bugs by yourself there is still a chance you won’t get them all.

The truth is, as you will come to realize through research of your own, getting rid of bed bugs is not an easy process. The reason it’s so difficult to get rid of them is that each adult female produces about one egg per day and each egg takes 10 days to hatch. Furthermore, it only takes another five to six weeks for the offspring to develop into an adult and be ready to procreate.

Our OKC pest control team is ready for the month of February and all it has to offer, are you? If you have bed bugs, chances are you’re probably not ready for anything except some relief!

The month for love and romance is no time at all to be getting bitten up by bed bugs! Sleeping soundly in a bug-free bed is something everyone deserves. The last thing you’d want your significant other or special sweetheart to notice is that your bed has been infested with bed bugs causing them to be dinner for the gross, little insects. Likewise, did you know that your guests could actually bring bed bugs with them? It’s true as they can be very good at hiding. Read on to learn more.

Are bed bugs even still around?

You may think bed bugs are less common these days than they were in the past, but our OKC pest control team is here to tell you that we’ve seen them make a big return! Older generations will remember they were a common occurrence before World War II in the United States and the epidemic seemed to eliminated for quite some time, but records indicate bed bugs remained prevalent in other areas of the world and that increases in immigration, travel, and restrictions on stronger pesticides have played a role in the comeback of these disgusting blood suckers.

Can you see them and if so what do they look like?

Bed bugs are tiny and they are very good at hiding in beds, dark areas, in luggage, and on clothing. If you do happen to see them they can be identified as reddish brown in color and even more red after they’ve sucked the blood of humans or animals. They also often leave behind evidence that they’ve been in your bed. Here are a few tips from our OKC pest control team to help you know what to look out for:

  • Bug skins or shells
  • Egg cases
  • Fecal stains on mattress, sheets, blankets, or pillows
  • Blood stains on sheets or pajamas
  • Sometimes a musty odor
