OKC Pest Control: Protecting You And Your Bedding

In part one of this series, our OKC pest control team went into detail about how bed bugs have made their way back into the lives of many Americans. We also gave some tips on how to identify these blood sucking bugs in the event that you might have them, too! Today, our OKC pest control team will be answering a few prevalent questions people often have about bed bugs.

Do bed bugs leave evidence on the body?

Just as bed bugs leave behind evidence that they’ve been in your bed, they also leave distinct rash-like patches on the skin where they’ve bitten. These patches can be rather blotchy around the face, neck, back, hands, and arms.  If scratched, the bites can become infected and typically, there are no treatment options unless infection does set in. Bed bugs can transmit Trypanosoma cruzi, the parasite that causes Chagas disease, one of the most prevalent and deadly diseases in the Americas.

Can you get rid of bed bugs without professional treatment?

With a lot of diligence and patience you may be able to do some hard work on your own, but be warned it’s not going to be pretty. As bed bugs can hide in various places you would need to take the most thorough actions possible and remove every large piece of furniture, bag up stuffed animals and like items, and clean up really well. Unfortunately, even if you take every precaution to clean up the mess of bed bugs by yourself there is still a chance you won’t get them all.

The truth is, as you will come to realize through research of your own, getting rid of bed bugs is not an easy process. The reason it’s so difficult to get rid of them is that each adult female produces about one egg per day and each egg takes 10 days to hatch. Furthermore, it only takes another five to six weeks for the offspring to develop into an adult and be ready to procreate.
