Pest Control OKC: Facts about Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are a terrible nuisance, they infest our bed and feed on us as we sleep. They’re hard to discover and once you do, they’re even harder to get rid of. It’s good to know how these pests spread and how they feed in order to better combat them.

How do they spread: Bed Bugs mostly hang around, well, beds and other furniture. So, how do they go from place to place? There are 2 main ways bed bugs spread: Travelers and secondhand furniture. Hotels and other traveling accommodations are magnets for bed bugs. The high number of humans coming in and out means there’s plenty to eat and plenty of opportunities to stow away in an unknowing vacationers things. Then, once your home they can begin to infest your residence! Secondhand Furniture should be checked carefully as this is another common way bed bugs move. You buy an old sofa from a friend or from a craigslist ad thinking it’s a good deal. But if you don’t check that sofa might be hiding some bed bugs the previous owner missed or just didn’t tell you about.

How do they Feed: Bed bugs feed on blood and they primarily feed at night when we’re sleeping. Bed bugs usually don’t feed every night. Typically they will feed around once a week. Females need to eat more so they can produce babies, called nymphs. Bed bugs will also usually only stick to one host and never stray far from their nest. That means that if 2 or more people in your house are suffering bed bug attacks, it’s likely 2 different nests with completely different bugs. If bed bugs get hungry enough, they can also come out during the day out of desperation.
